Default How to increase mileage.

Hey, I drive a 2000 DX 5 speed. Ive been using it for my job as a delivery driver... but it just isn't that fuel efficient. It gets about 440 KM per tank (yes im canadian lol. That's about ~275 miles) Anyways, I did a mpg calculator and I found out I'm only getting about 26 mpg. That's not that great.

So, there's a few problems with the car. First off, there's no muffler (lol). I know that'll effect the mileage, but by how much? Secondly, I'm not the most peaceful driver on the road. I like to go fast, and I know that doesn't help either. Other then that... The car has about 215,000 KMs (~134k Miles)

Is there any sure-fire ways to get some better mileage?

Thanks guys.

start with the basics:

changed the air filter recently (at all?)
spark plugs/wires
fuel filter
proper inflation of tires (low tire pressure affects mileage)

with it being a 5-speed, why not put the car in neutral when going down hills, and let it coast? that seems to really perk mine up as well.

its the little things that will help

My 1998 EX 5-speed gets 28 mpg when I am slamming on it, and usually gets closer to 31 when I don't drive like an A**hat.

Thanks, well.. I just replaced the airfilter this week, and I have noticed a bit of a difference. I think I might replace the plugs/plug wires. And as for coasting, I do coast whenever I can :P

the other easy one would be to replace the fuel filter, unlike most cars, it is actually under the hood, and is really easy to get to, don't even have to lift the car off the ground!

Realistically, you should be getting better than 25-26, especially on a new(er) honda like the one you have.

Question

OK, I thought I had a handle on gas mileage. But this discussion has me questioning that. I've got a 2007 Civic automatic. I'm not a lead-foot, and I always pop it into neutral on downhill grades. I get an extremely consistent 25 mpg, and have ever since I bought the car.

Are you saying I should be getting better?

I saw a recent news report that investigated the claims of a few of the "very high mileage" new cars. They said that the only way you get the kind of mileage they claim (typically in the high 30s low 40s) was to buy the special "Green" versions of the model, and then drive only on the freeway. They said that the stock version of the average brand new "high mileage" cars was only about 29 mpg. That made me think that my 25, on an '07 Civic, was probably not bad.

^ Your civic should be getting better than 25mpg. What percentage is highway/city miles?

Remove unnecessary weight from the car. If you have a bunch of nonsense in there, it will adversely affect mileage.

I have a 93 VX with a 5sp, I get a solid 39mpg with a pretty bad o2 sensor and in need of some serious maintenance. Got 44 mpg on a 3 hour drive down the freeway...
