Default power steering delete

I have a sixth gen hatchback, and I was considering removing the power steering to improve mpg. I've read up a lot on the pros and cons of removing it, but I've found very little info discussing mpg gains. I found one link where someone estimated around a 2'ish mpg gain. Has anyone here tried this?

I have mine removed, but it was not for mpg. I did not see anything notable. P/S was pulled off for a better feel when turning etc.

Thanks! I am really considering doing this. I've heard about the other benefits, like feeling the road better and a slight power increase, as well. If I do go through with it, I'll be sure to post the effect on mpg.

You could test the concept by just removing the belt first. That would eliminate any drag on the engine. Removing the other parts will just lighten the car.

Removing the belt only will give you a false reading on the "feel" as there is still fluid in the rack. You would be fighting that fluid to turn the vehicle.

To "properly" remove P/S, the rack/column must be drained, the lines on the rack looped and the rack refilled with some sort of oil/lubricant.

However, if you wish to try and see benefits regarding mpgs, removing the belt will help with that.

just my opinion, but as opposed to trying to gain MPG/HP by removing the power steering belt/pump, why not remove the A/C compressor belt instead?

Or just remove both systems entirely
