is it even legal to do a cut and shut job in the US?
It is definatly not here
generally, no

if your state has any sort of safety inspection for registerring cars, they'll instantly prohibit you from driving, and registering them

it's extremely unsafe, especially wth a unibody

what were going to do is insert some kind of metal rods inside these holes and the other half holes and weld it all together.
i think thats what they were telling. something of that kind. [:-]

what about the roof? it is a key factor in the integrity of the body.

Just like everyone else its not safe but, you do whatever you want. If I were you I'll just called your half car and your rear ended car salvaged and junk out.

Also, wouldn't it be easier and safer to take that 75k miles motor out and put it in another body?

you know what, just do what you want, no one is stopping you, i hope the best for you and your car, i hope you don't injure yourself in the process of this to just save yourself a few pennies, it sounds like you know what you're doing and you know what you want. unibodies aren't a great platform for this type of work unlike older cars. all i'm gonna say is good luck.
