Default at 30mph, which gear?

So I've been wondering something...
at about 30 if you're just cruisin around, you can either stick with 3rd gear at about...2.2k rmps
or you can do 4th gear at like...1.8k rpms

Those are kinda rough ideas...but which would be better to do?
Would one be easier on the engine or would one be better for gas?
I figured 4th gear would be better for gas (lower rpms), but that's not taking into consideration any sweet spots and I was wondering if that actually makes the engine work harder.

Just curious...cause I have a strip of road around my house that I often take, and 30 is about the good speed to go.

If I'm already at speed with no one in front or behind me. I sometimes go down my road (a long straight stretch) in neutral and just coast. That's how you save gas. 600rpms mother F*cker

lol that reminds me of a geo metro i use to drive. At about 70 mph on the interstate if you got up right behind a semi truck and you were on level road you could draft him in neutral... unreal gas mileage...

It was probably 20 - 30 feet off his bumper, and its not like I did it all the time. I noticed it one night on the way home from work.

It actually gives both me and the trucker better gas mileage as it breaks down the vacuum that builds up behind the truck..
