The fast idle valve on the throttle body may be stuck closed. Here's how to check:

Check whether the WHT/GRN wire to the power lock control unit (behind driver door panel) is getting power. If so, the power lock control unit may be bad.

Adjust the valve clearance if you haven't already. These engines do not have valve lifters, the rocker arms must be adjusted periodically to compensate for wear. Misadjusted valves cause a noisy engine that gets quieter when it warms up. Valve noise is from the top of the engine of course but sometimes it's hard to tell.

Double check whether fuse #6 is blown or loose. Otherwise, the WHT/GRN wire running from the fuse box to the control unit may be broken. Use a multimeter to test continuity of this wire.

I proposed that you check the fast idle valve because I thought that the cold idle might be too low. When the engine is knocking, are the engine idle rpms substantially below spec?
