RE: bad news
holy crap. I took the pan off and it was fine. we cranked it a few times by hand and didnt see anything out of the ordinary, so we put it all back together and cranked it. well, no weird noises, so that must have been me being paranoid and the way i only cranked it a second. then we did a compression test, and it had 220 in all four cylinders, so thats not the problem, then we checked for spark. none. AH-HAH! pulled the ignitor out of the b16 on the engine stand and plugged it in. started right up. damn, that was weird, i just havent ever seen one go out all of a sudden like that. i mean it was literally revving hard at about 7500 rpm, then just died. damnit, it wasnt even worth towing. i could have fixed it on the side of the road in like 5 minutes. and of course it was the thing i should have known to check first. oh well, better safe than sorry. its all good now. just sitting waiting for some new toys i have on order for it

If you're a member of AAA you should be able to register the car in one of their offices (so long as there's nothing funky with the reg). I'm in CA too and when we transferred my Civic into my name it was a quick 5 minutes and $15 and I was on my way. Now that I think of it, when we bought the '87 Civic we handled paying the taxes and transfer fees at AAA as well.
CA DMVs suck big time. I tagged along with a friend a few years ago and it was miserable.

Good news.
The way you described it I thought you had broken the damn crank or something.
