crisis averted yet again...
I was driving to work yesterday morning, minding my own business. Almost there, I hit a set of train tracks (as I do every morning) and almost immediately I heard this odd wobbly high-pitched squeaking sound. WTF?! Belt slipping? Intake falling apart?? I only had to drive about a quarter of a mile before I could pull over (not enough time to descend into full panic mode) and it squeaked the whole time until I stopped. Popped the hood, everything appeared to be normal. Revved the engine... nothing. Hmm. Took a look at the driver's side front wheel, and found the problem.
A walnut.
Half a walnut, actually.
Jammed up against the rotor, behind the caliper. One side was completely flattened out, and it was in there so tightly I had to back up to remove it. I'm lucky the damned thing didn't catch fire!

And I don't know how it got there. We have a lot of black walnut trees on my street, but I was a good 6 miles from home before I heard any noise.
