spins the gutts in the tranny to speed to match the axle gears or some crap like that..... not needed really but if your syncros are going out or gone then it might help you slip into gear without GRINDING

double clutching was used in the 70s to match the sync of your tranny. No need for double clutching now anymore

If you are having to double clutch to get your transmission into gear with grinding, then you've got a problem with your synchros. If the synchros are working correctly, you should haver have to double clutch, even when downshifting into first gear.

For those of you old enough to remember 3-speed on the column shifters, double-clutching was the only way to get into first if you were moving. When they went to four-on-the-floor most trannysadded synchro on all four gears.

The car I learned to drive on, a '54 Chevy, needed double shifting to drop into low (1st) to go up a steep driveway or similar. I for one am glad that shift method is now obsolete. Yes, I am that old.

I had a friend in high school who got his dads '77 Maverick (ford, yuk!!) when he got his license. It had a "3 on the tree" column shifter. I don't remember him having to double clutch though. My 1981 Z28 Camaro has a Muncie M21 4-speed from a 1967 Corvette and it has syncronizers so I don't have to double clutch it either.
