Typically an EG is a 92-95 (or 5th Gen) and the EK is the 96-2000 (6th Gen).
the differences i know of are the interior/exterior, OBD's are different with each generation, you can tune the EG's easier due to the OBD-I ECM.

the suspensions are basicaly the same, the D-series engines are mostly interchangable (blocks and heads, mainly) there is a probably more but i forget it.

What is the difference between EG and EK?
EG is better. lol. Well, at least I like them better. But then again, I drive one, so my opinion is biased.

EG is lighter,

easier to modify certain parts because it has OBD1, as opposed to the EK's OBD2 (as previously stated by koots and riceburner700),

is the older chassis (92-95) and might have some bad wiring and/or more rust (basically more wear and tear) as opposed to the EK (96-00)

The EG came in
CX (with a SOHC D15B8 1.5L engine that had 8 valves andlacks VTEC, but gets better gas mileage - 70hp I think)
DX and LX (with a SOHC D15B7 1.5L engine that has 16 valves and lacks VTEC - 102hp)
and the EX (with a SOHC D16Z6 1.6L engine that has 16 valves and VTEC - around 125hp I think)

The EK came in
HX (with a SOHC D16Y5 engine- the economy engine - has VTEC-E)
CX, DX, and LX (with a SOHCD16Y7 engine with 16 valves and lacking VTEC - 106hp)
EX (with a SOHC D16Y8 engine with 16 valves and VTEC - 127hp)
and the Si (only available in 99-00)(with a DOHC B16A2 - 170hp)

The EK's interior is a little more updated, as to be expectedsince it is a newer generation.

I think the EG looks more aggressive, and I like the headlights better. Also, the EK has a front grille where the honda emblem is, that I don't like too much unless it has been replaced with a type R grille.

Many parts are interchangeable, such as exhaust, header, many intake systems,I think springs, andi'm pretty sure the heads are all swappable on those listedD series engines.

I must mention that an OBD-2 to OBD-1 conversion is possible for the EK civics. which i am gonna do soon so that i can tune it.

EG generally better for modding.

EK generally better car stock.
