You can do acid dipping, I'm pretty sure someone on the forum had thier head acid dipped and it cleaned it up. Check the project section. You can also try cleaning the cylinder head with some engine degreaser.

engine degreaser is the most cost effective way to clean a head, most others don't see a difference compared to the cost.

Shampoo. Works every time.

Sorry - couldn't resist.

If you're looking for cleaning the outside of the head for aesthetics, then a couple cans of carb cleaner followed by a bath of engine degreaser. But if you'rereally serious about getting the whole thing clean, take it to a machine shop and have them hot tank it. Just like steam cleaning. It'll be spotless when you're done.

my dad's uncle used to build dirt track race motors, and before he assemblies any components, he washes the entire engine with soap and water. it removes any contaminents and dirt and dust.

Dawn dishwashing detergent makes a wonderful degreaser. So does Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. Amazingly enough, Castrol Super-Clean Engine Degreaser (Purple Stuff) smells exactly like Easy-Off... things that make ya go 'Hmmmmm....'
