Default Are Honda fluids really necessary?

The manuals all tout Honda fluids exclusively. Do you think they are really that critical? A lot of fluidmanufacturers devote their whole business to these products. Honda makes a great car, but do they really think that their fluids are so necessary that they can't be duplicated, or even improved on?

that's just so "stupid" people don't go out buying generic stuff, but if you buy any namebrand oils you should be just fine.

Any fluid that meets the SAE standards which Honda meets with their fluids will be absolutely fine.

The seals in the power steering rack will become leaky if you don't use Honda fluid. Most generic power steering fluid is now specifically lablelled "Not for Honda" but it didn't use to be that way.
