Are Honda fluids really necessary?

Are Honda fluids really necessary?
The manuals all tout Honda fluids exclusively. Do you think they are really that critical? A lot of fluidmanufacturers devote their whole business to these products. Honda makes a great car, but do they really think that their fluids are so necessary that they can't be duplicated, or even improved on?

The seals in the power steering rack will become leaky if you don't use Honda fluid. Most generic power steering fluid is now specifically lablelled "Not for Honda" but it didn't use to be that way.
