How do you shift your car?

I put my foot on the brake foot thing, grab the wacha call it that sticks up from the middle.... and I pull the little button thingie and slide the stick back to the D with the box around it. I take my one foot off of the brake foot pedal and I move it over to the gas one, and stomp on it! To go backwards I just do it in reverse.
Is that how your supposed to do it.................. ?
