Default MPG's

Hello everybody.

I have a 2000 Civic Ex Coupe with a 1.6 Vtec engine and it's only giving me around 17 MPG driving in the city.

I've heard that it's supposed to give me around 24-26, is this true???

Do any of you guys have any pointers you can give me on how I can improve this? I mean, something to look for in my engine or something?

I would really appreciate help in this or maybe comments from some of you guys that have the same car or maybe know somebody that has so that I can see if this is normal or not.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. Low MPGs can be caused by alot of things. Here are a few possibilities. You may need a tune up. You may have a bad oxygen sensor. Or you may have a lead foot.

Hi ! I'm a new member also. We have 3 civics in our garage. Good milage is very important to me. Like 94DXproject said, there are many things that can cause bad gas milage. He listed a few. Here are a few more to check! (How many miles on your civic?) When was the last time you replaced the spark plugs? Is your air filter like new? Proper air pressure in your tires? All hose lines ok with no holes or broken connections? Injectors clean? Running 5w20 motor oil and changing it as required? Using good, fresh and clean gas? Changed your gas filter recentely? The list goes on and on! Anyone of these things can make your milage go down. Combine a few of these items and you will easily get your present poor milage. My 2004 Civic VP gets 35 mpg mixed driving. Yours is easily capable of 25mpg city and 30 highway. Good luck on your search to improve your milage. Ken

yes indeed welcome to forum. that is really great getting 40 miles to the gallon. I would say that mines gets like 20 or so miles to the gallon. I'm not complaining. I really like driving my civic, so i think that i case of the lead foot. plus for all i do in my car 20 gallons is ok by me compared to what used to get in old truck.
