Default Not even 9000 km between oil change -- normal?

I have a 2010 Civic SE. It has around 40,000 km. I did an oil change at the dealer in August, and I cleared Trip B counter to see how many km it can last until the next oil change, and now not even 9,000 km on Trip B counter and the maintenance indicator is already on. Is this normal?

Do I have to go to the dealer for the maintenance? Last time I went, they did a whole bunch of stuff and it ended up costing $500+. I don't know if all that is necessary. I certainly don't feel like paying another $500 for the car before the year is even out.

Thanks.

don't go the dealer to throw your money away.

you have a new car, it does not need costly repairs every time you go in.

9k km is about 5600 miles. To me, that sounds normal.

The vehicle maintenance light is just there for the average person to see and take their car in.

It is not a perfect system for vehicle maintenance.

For oil changes, spend $10 on a oil drain pan, $30 for some pennzoil ultra or mobil 1 full synthetic oil, and $10 for a K&N oil filter. Buy a 17mm wrench for easy oil filter and oil drain plug removal/install.

Don't even need to jack up the car, just slide pan under, drain, remove oil filter, finish draining, plug drain, fill, done.

With synthetic oil, a safe oil change would be around 7500 miles about 12,100 kilometers.

Just look at the checklist Honda does for you, you can easily do it probably in under 10 minutes.

There's a lot any average person can do to their car and keep it properly maintained just as well as the dealer.

Once a week check engine oil level and tire pressure. A few times a year spray the rubber seals around the front suspension parts/axles with some spray silicone.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that warrants a $500+ bill every time you go in for regular maintenance checks. Especially for a 2 year old car there should be nothing wrong.
