Default oil

What's the best oil to use in a 99 Civic with a D16y7? Im planning for spring for an oil change and was wondering the brand, the number and if synthetic or not. Also if I should get a certain kind of filter or just Walmart brand?

5W-30 for winter

10W-30 for temperatures that don't drop below 20 ºF

Sorry, don't know the Honda part number, but the K&N filter is HP-1004, and I couldn't be happier with them. I don't know that there's a lot, if any, quality difference between any of the filters, but the K&N's are wrench-off, which I find to be quite convenient in our cramped engine compartments.

i stopped using the K&N filters because while great in theory, the nut on the end is its downfall because it is easily rounded off when trying to remove a stubborn filter later on. I switched to mobil1 filters and I bought an actual oil filter socket to be used on a socket wrench. Still great filters, and removal isn't sketchy.

i think the book says to run 5w-30 in canada. brand, whatevers on sale when i need it changed. running castrol syntec right now. i use the fram synthetic filters. theyve got that roughed up end, and i just tighten it by hand.

some guy at work was telling me that you shouldnt put synthetic in an engine that hasnt ran on it from the start. said the seals would wear out or something. i still ran the synthetic, dont know if its true or a load of bs.

fram filters suck

if you want the one with the roughed up end get a purolator gold filter

and it's 5W-30 for anywhere where temperatures get down to 20º F. But of course in the summer you could run 10W-30. In FL I ran 10W-30 all year long in my del sol. It lubricates better but in cold temperatures it thickens up easier
