Default Oil change

I took my 08 Civic EX to the local Honda dealer last week for an oil change (current odometer: 5500 Miles, oil life at 40%), because I always believe that an oil change is needed every 5000 miles. But, dealer said 5000 miles oil change is not needed. I was told to wait until maintenance minder light comes on. Dealer also said that oil change light should come on when oil life is at 15% or less. I still have 40% because I drive 90% freeway.

When making oil change and other maintenance on a Honda, should one follow conventional method (oil change every 5000 miles, maintenance at 15000, 30000 miles etc...) or just follow maintenance minder?

I change mine every 3000 miles. But I'm hyper sensitive. Haha. Like to take THE best care of my car as I can.

i'd play it on the safeside and go every 5000 miles, even with full synthetic oil. but do follow the maintence schedule otherwise, best way to keep ur car chugging along.

So, I should go ahead and change oil every 5000 miles and follow maintenance minder at the same time if the light comes on?

I go about every 6-7000 miles. And I always take it to the Honda dealership.
3000 miles? No real benenfit to such frequent changes unless you do all short trips, stop and go driving, in severe conditions. Otherwise that's just wasting oil.

Is there some reason you believe you know more about your Honda than Honda does? Unless you wish to be bothered by the maintenance light coming on at weird times, just go by the light. The subject of when to do oil changes always starts an interesting thread here.

Note: My response was to gijoe24jp here.

The 3000 mile oil change is being kept alive by the quick oil change company's [ jiffy lube - texaco - etc.] Of course they want you to come in more often. Most cars can go 5-6000 miles with no problems. It doesn't hurt to change it more often but why waste money. Honda designed and built the engine - if they say go by oil life indicator then i bet they know what there talking about.

I change mine every 3000-5000 miles. That hole oil life indicator. how does it know when you ned to change you oil? does it know how much contamination the oil has at any given time?
