is premium necessary
so ive always heard that with a turbo u always had to use premium 91 or better gas never really new y guess i just believed what i heard so i told my dad that that was what i needed to put in my new civic turbo and he said that it made absolutely no difference what gas i used but i tried to expalin that since it is burning more air at a faster rate that it would need the higher octane to reduce detonation is that true or did i just bs him

Is this a factory turbo or a turbo conversion of an originally NA engine?Factory stock, NA or turbo, just use what the manufacturerspecifies.A conversion is definitely going to needhigher octane. Itmight be hard or impossible to hear knocking if you also have a racing intake and exhaust.

OP, you are right on the button. You need the higher octane rating to help reduce detonation. However, I would definitly stick to 91-93 (93 unless you can't find it, then use 91). Don't just go tossing 100octane in unless you're tuning for it.
Is it a Torco station that sells the 100 octane by you? I live in a decent sized city and never once saw anything above 93 octane. Not until I went out to a little town about 20 minutes from here, <10k population, and they had two freakin Torco race fuel stations

pshh... 100 octane... you might as well just go with Turbo Blue... 115 octane, I believe... and it's only about double the price of regular unleaded where I live (not to mention I only know of one station around herethat has it).
But, yeah... you're exactly right saying you need higher octane on a boosted motor. I take it your dad's not really big on cars?
