Question about my hatchback.
Hi,
New poster here, I wanted to consult the experts on a general question.
I bought my 96 Civic Hatch DX about 8 years for a fuel efficient daily driver. About a year ago the transmission went out on it, I just parked it. The poor car has just been sitting there slowly rotting...
The time has come to do something with it, I am torn between just dumping it for a new car or fixing the tranny and trying to mod it a bit. The car is just really slow! Great gas mileage, but I would love to get more speed and response out of it. I know this is the base model civic, so my question is this: Would you recommend trying to fix up this car? I have 15 years professional experience working on all brands of motorcycles and I have tinkered with cars since I got my first chevy blazer in 1985. I have worked on electronics for the last 10 years. I'm not afraid of a project, like an engine swap, but I just got through reading Splat's V6 swap and that is way over what I am willing to do, much less have the time for. I guess what I am asking is, is this car worth even trying to make faster or would I be fighting a huge battle?

Hmmm i say go for a swap and just have fun with it.
How much would u be willing to spend on it if it were strictly your project car? Cause there are several ways you could go with a new motor and trany just need to kno how much money your lookin at and how much work u wouldnt mind putting into her.

OP its definetly worth it to fix up the civic since u can do the work yourself
now you have to decide what sort of power you want and we will guide you
unless you want a super fast car id suggest a GSR swap (B18C1) it would be fun to drive and still relatively fuel efficient and if you get bored later you can always turbo it

i agree with hamorhead entirely.
go get your self a b18c1 and s80 tranny and have a ball
it will feel a million miles an hour faster then the old stock drivetrain
and like everybody seems to be concerned with< it should get round 30 mpg.
thats what my 97 hatch gsr swap did. anyway
and it was fun
and you can deffinetly get it going for 5k

Awesome, this is what I was hoping to find! Thank you so much for the input!
So I need to get the integra motor and tranny. I assume I will need the computer and some wiring harness add ons also? I am at work now, but I will do some snooping in the forums for the GSR swap.

Called a local junkyard and he had the motor, tranny, and ECU for $3700 (motor $2500, trans $1000, and ECU $200). I know pricing is different per region, but is that a decent price for all three? I was checking local first, but I would definately ship one in if they are cheaper around the country.
