Default Quick easy question about a distributor

On my distributor cap there are 2 holes on the top with wires coming out 2 are there stock on the right side but on the left there is 1 wire which is my tach wire, but there is an open hole where the tach wire is coming out on the other side where 2 wires are coming out theres a rubebr gaurd.

Would having an open hole cause a distributor to malfunction?? If there was a heavy fog maybe it could get damp inside..? Thanks!!! Its a 91 civic

Just buy a new cap from your local dealer because they always give the gasket included and it provides a perfect seal.

ya i would replace it ...... any moisture in thier can keep your car from running! thats the reason i had such a hard time geting my 94running after droping in the replacement motor! i was so pissed off cause it wouldnt fire up and ended up being a coroded distributor cap!

You don't need a new wire to run a tach. One of the stock wires has that signal already. I think it is the smaller one in the plug with two wires, but since it runs up to the cluster already anyway, just tap it inside the car.

I dont have a stock tach, its a std model civic. But anyways the car wa giving me problems and it had to do with the distributor so I replaced the cap and rotor which were so pitted and had lots of carbon on it. Runs perfect now, and I covered the hole. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the std model also has a tach wire going to the cluster, it just doesn't connect to anything there. You can connect an aftermarket tach to it.
