Actually you could start your car with the clutch not in. My teacher once told me a story that his 65 Mustang ran out of gas right by the gas station. Instead of pushing his car to the station, he jus cranked the car into the gas station.
^ Really not brilliant.

Also, my friends 96 Jetta will try to start without the clutch. It was mad funny when he forgot to push the clutch and ran into his garage.

Also, what's your ex's number, Forty?

Ive never started my car WITH the clutch in. It's only worth starting with the clutch in if it's incredably cold, or your battery is really low. With the clutch in the engine can turn over without turing the transmision too, thus making it easier on the starter motor/battery. If your car is in good shape there is no dicernable difference between clutch in or out starting.

Once again, outright incorrect. Did it today and yesterday.

well, after one experience when i was younger, i never start a car without the clutch in. i tried to start my mom's car, just to be nice, and i was sitting in the passenger sit when doing this. i just turned the key, and scared the crap out of myself because the car lurched forward and died. not good, especially in a parking lot with another car parked in front of us. luckily, the car didn't run into anything, but never again have i started a manual tranny car without the clutch.

I know my new one (its a 98 new for me [:'(] ) I have to have clutch in and it in neutral I think or else it wont start. Not sure about the neutral but I thought it had to be in neutral.
