i have a 6th gen civic 1.8VTI aerodeck, if you look at the induction pipe (if thats what you might call it) near the point where it joins the engine, there is a odd looking pipe coming out of it, looks like a sex toy or something! (maybe about 6 - 7 inches long and 1 - 2 " dia
can anyone tell me what this is for? is it some sort of restrictor? and if so can i take it off and blank off the hole where it comes out of to improve the power without causing any harm?

I could be very wrong, but it sounds like a silencer if there is nothing coming out of it or going to it... IMO

 

a silencer on an induction pipe? sounds a bit unlilkely to me, it would only be silencing the "woosh" of the air wouldnt it?

 

by induction do you mean intake? because if so, then yes, there could be a silencer; they diffuse the sound of the engine coming back out of the intake...

 

yeah thats it the air intake! Its just I thought you couldnt get sound within a vacuum and being that its a pretty much constant vacuum in the intake that the only sound would be from the air being sucked into it

 

Car manufacturers actually silence that noise, it also restricts the air going into the engine.

 

so if I took it off it would improve the airflow & performance?

 

not really because they do not create a bottle-neck depending on where they are located. If it is just attached to the side of your intake, then no, it wont help help your performance. if air goes through it, then it removing it could possibly help... avery little bit... lol

 

fair enough, although obviously i was hoping for you to say something like "yes, take it off an get a 20 bhp increase" lol. (just a joke, I know it wouldnt be an amazing increase like that....would be good if it was though eh!?) ah well...
