For one thing vtec dont "scream" on a sohc, it is a smooth relaxed transition. Now there are 4 things that will keep you from going into vtec.

1. A faulty vtec selenoid
2. Your car has thrown a check engine light and is in safe mode
3. Lack of oil pressure
4. A faulty ecu
