I have a 2001 Civic EX with 117000 miles.
Has anyone had ant problems with the timing belt high mileage on these cars?

 

The maintenance schedule for your car recommends you change the timing belt at 110,000 miles. So you are just a little beyond that. I would advise you to go ahead and do it or get it done soon. Mine had 130,000 miles on it when I changed it, so yes the belt canlast beyond the specified replacement interval, however it is risky to not replace it. Also, if the vehicle is regularly operated in extreme temperature conditions (above 110 Deg F or below 20 Deg F) the belt should be replaced at 60,000 mile intervals. Most mechanics I know recommend the 60,0000 mile interval regardless.

 

your supposed to change your timing belt at 60,000 miles.

 

funny, i remember my manual specifically saying 115,000 miles for my old 6th gen...

60k service interval for a domestic vehicle maybe, but honda's last much longer than that.

i have a 7th generation civic. Idk about the 6th gens, but in 7th gens, the manual has recommend to change the timing belt at 60k. Even my mechanic was telling me i need a change at 60k. My car is about at 80k and i haven't change it but will do so. Yes we all know honda last long but no point in taking a risk. Also could be i have non VTEC and he has the VTEC-E.


Btw the new honda civics use timing chain now? I didnt know that. And you dont really need to change timing chain, you change the timing belts, the chains are stronger and they last a long time

 

main thing to do is INSPECT THE BELT..... see if its smoothed out the teeth, or has any frayed ends or dry looking belt.... if so have it replaced...

ive heard some people say taht newer motors the valves wont hit the pistons if the belt does snap BUT i sure as hell dont want find out the hard way!!!!!

Be careful what info you are dishing out,
as it has been said before, no information is better then the wrong information!
100,000miles and 100,000km are very different.

I found a website for a dealership:

They recommend 90,000 miles for 96 and earlier year models. They recommend 105,000 miles for 97 and later models.

A timing chain is way more robust than a timing belt. Timing chains are basically meant to last the life of the car, barring any poor maintenance. Thats why you only check them once every 150k.

says (and yes i am looking at the correct part) that it is RECOMMENDED that that timing BELT
be changed 60,000 miles OR 100,000K

As you said, timing CHAINS are made to last longer than a timing belt would
I do believe older models of civics had a chain at one time
but for the 2001 EX I am 100% positive that it is a BELT and not a chain
