Default Wheel Theft Ring on North Shore / Mass. ?

We woke up the other day to our neighbor calling us. She noticed that our Acura RSX was up on cinder blocks, and all four tires and of course rims were gone. It was parked on the street in front of my 2006 Civic. (So much for wheel locks ... ). Our front yard is on a wall, and there's a huge rock with shrubbery - so it makes it hard to see the cars. Plus I was jet lagged, so I was out cold.

At first I thought it was an isolated incident. We have all sorts of characters driving by all the time - it was just a matter of time before something like this happend. But then I read this: Thieves leave three cars on cinder blocks; police ramp up overnight patrols. On top of that a co-worker who lives in Lynn found her car up on blocks a while ago. I didn't realize she had a 2004 Civic. I'm seeing a pattern here (we live on the North Shore of Massachusetts).

My guess is they spotted my car, but decided the rims on the Acura were worth more and went for that instead.

Does anyone else know of people in the North Shore of Massachusetts finding their Civic up on blocks?

BTW, wondering if the people who were so arrogant to pull this off on the street would be back, I stayed up late to see if anyone would return to the scene of the crime (for more parts or just to show their friends). Around midnight some white sports car blew by the house, slammed it in reverse and backed right up next to the Acura - saw me in the window and sped off. Maybe gawkers, maybe not. Of course the police were extremely disinterested in this detail.

I'm surprised the Acura's alarm didn't go off when the car was tilted. I guess what you get from the factory - along with the wheel locks - are totally useless. I'll be upgrading both cars to a system with shock and tilt detectors. It's infuriating to see the Acura up on blocks, but the red alarm light is still flashing like everything's okay.

Most factory alarms don't have a shock or tilt sensor. It's very basic, only detects someone trying to open a door without the key, and makes it so you can't start the car just by punching out the ignition lock.

Dang, that sucks man. I will be looking into upgrading my alarm system, and keeping watch for prowlers.

^ yup , like you said get an aftermarket alarm system with tilt sensor.definitely worth the investment, hearing your alarm go off when they jack up the car. you should consider the two way paging system where you get paged when your alarm goes off. but you need to be within like a mile range of your car.

i find this kind of funny
"In most cases, it's an equal swap," Farrington said.

He said that if a kid with a 1990s Honda Civic wanted to make his car look newer and better, one way to do it would be to steal the tires and rims from a late model Civic and put them on his car.

"It makes an older vehicle appear newer," he said.

LOL

hell theft is just theft......
if you did have decent wheel locks then you probably bought them localy and localy..... well theres only so many kinds and a pro wheel theif has a set of alot of locks!

but if its something you really want to protect id HIGHLY SUGEST a 2way paging alarm system and a tilt sesor as well. i put one on my 99civic and it works great!
not only will it protect your wheels it will also help if someone tries to tow your car the alarm system will go off and page your remote control telling you the alarms going off and you can run out after there @ss with your gun or jump into another vehicle of yours and chase them down while calling the cops!

i myself am just glad i have a garage to park in...

We had wheel locks - it didn't seem to slow them down. I'm sure that the other Civics that were up on blocks had locks too. They were standard with my 2006. I don't know if something like the Gorilla locks would be any better. From what I've seen a better alarm system is the way to go.

How do I figure out which is a good alarm system for my Civic ?

From what I've read you want something that will allow you to park at an angle and remember that angle, instead of going off automatically because the car is tilted. You also want something where you can adjust the sensitivity.

I have another issue. I'm about to take a job that will require shipping my car across country. I'd need something where I can disable the tilt alarm so it doesn't freak out that it's on a car carrier.

well when shipping just tell him not to arm the system. just manualy lock the doors and manualy unlock them when unloading. very simple!

and most new tilt sensors automaticaly relearn the angle all the time...
my tilt sensor resets every 30seconds. and it takes more than the wind to set it off. its suposedly adjustable also but i didnt need to tweak mine any. just test it out.... mine will go off about an inch before the wheel gets off the ground. and any thief will never see that coming!
