Which year did the newer ignitions arrive?
I had a 1999 Honda Civic EX which was recently stolen. I heard that for older Civics like mine it was easier to start the ignition without the key, but that it became more difficult with newer models a few years later. In which year did they first come out with the models that are more difficult for thieves to start without the key? I want to know because I want to buy a used Civic but don't want to get it stolen again. Please tell me the year the safer ignitions first came out.
In 2001 they added the "immobilizer" system with a chip in the key. (They also switched to the D17 engines, which are not fast.)
You can add a kill switch to an older model it's a highly effective theft deterrent. Basically it's a secret switch only you know about that shuts off the fuel or ignition while parked. Even if someone forces the key cylinder, it won't start.

Could you give me a quick simple outline of how that "immobilizer" system prevents theft?
Also, do I need a "kill switch" if I buy a 2001 or newer Civic - the models that have the immobilizer system?
Thanks
