Default Good question on cat-back custom piping

Hello world,
This site is HUGE and i hope to learn from you guys a lot. Now, here comes the question:

Current i have a magnaflow muffler welded on my stock pipe, it does not sound as loud as i wanted. Here's how it sounds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGbNWSd7kCc

I would like to have 2.25" cat-back custom piping installed. So it should be 1 straight 2.25" pipe with one end welded to my stock catalytic converter and the other end welded to my magnaflow muffler right? If so there will be no nutz and boltz to tighten up between the cat and the pipe, it will be weld directly to the cat right? Is this worth it to have a high flo cat if i plan to go for custom piping?

My car is civic dx 1992 with stock engin and aem intake.

The DX/LX has the catalytic converter built right onto the header whereas the EX doesn't. Because of this, the downpipes are entirely different lengths and an EX exhaust does not bolt onto a DX/LX model without custom fabrication.
Does it mean that my DX 92 sedan have the cat inside the stock header? so i can run the custom pipe all the way from the header to the muffler and called it a header-back instead of a cat-back???

Thanks

well just go look at it. You have a D15b7 if i'm correct, but just go look at your car. Is there a large bulge with an extra o2 sensor in it in your exhaust manifold? Is so, then yes you can run pipes from the header back. If not, look under the car to see if theres the cat bolted onto the exhaust mani. If thats the case, just run the piping from the cat back. I'd say get 2.25" piping with a flange that you can bolt onto the cat/header for easily modifying in the future. I'd also recommend a Magnaflow resonator to go somewhere in that exhaust piping. It'll sound ALOT smootehr and overall be better. They can be had on ebay for like $70. Try to get the pipe mandrel bent, press bent in good too, but crush bent is the worst [:'(] (each one is more restrictive than the last)

D-series Honda engines don't sound pretty when they get loud. maybe not so bad for racing but not on the street. I've got a header, no cat, 2.25" piping and a single magnaflow 5x8x14 muffler on it right now and it sounds nice but is absolutely horrendously loud and i feel bad for anyone that has to hear me merge into traffic lol.

Plus you really don't want to attract the police, cuz a Civic with a loud exhaust will attract them like it's their only purpose. I've already got one ticket for mine and i set off a car alarm. All things i'm not proud of, so thats why i got a high flow cat andresonator to go on it next week.

I never understand the "its not loud enough" theory. If you have that muffler sticking out the back, people will know that it is aftermarket. There is no need to make the hear it also. Get a catback, make sure you keep your cat, add a resonator and call it a day. No need to break any sound barriers.

so a resonator is more important than a high-flo cat if i'm on tight budget right? btw, what's the size of stock piping? and since it's not "loud enough" for me, adding a resonator is reasonable?

Thank you guys

^ yeah, magnaflow's resonators are extremely good.

Oh, and check out Vibrant Performance for the flange (if you decide to have the shop weld a flange that bolts up to the header)... they carry pretty much any shape/bolt pattern you'll need.

thanks, so where should i position the resonator to give the deepest sound: near the header or near the muffler or in the middle?
