RE: ?? best way to paint bumper DYI
I helped my brother paint, a bumper last summer. these were his conditions:
He had an existing bumber on the car already as well as one he wanted to paint, so he had lots of time for prep and paint.
1. scrub the bumper with soap and water, dont use anything too oily.
2. sand it down with higher grit sand paper(120)-(150) but allways start on a small part of the bumper to determine weather it is to rough. Its best to buy a pack of automotive variety sandpaper.
3. wash it down again
4. make sure the surface is smooth and clean.
5. spray bomb the entire surface with automotive primer.(your choice)spray it evenly/smooth (might need two coats)leave it to dry obviously.. the longer the better.
5/.5 If the bumper has bubbles or is uneven with specks. Sand it where needed and re-apply the primer smoothly.(low grit sand paper like 225-500)use your discretion and take your time.
6 If you have done these steps properly and patiently it should be ready for the colour paint.
!This is the most important step! Make sure your not getting dust around or on it.
7. Spray the first coat on evenly( by now you should have enough practice) Once the first coat drys make sure its nice and smooth, then apply the second coat(these are all thin coats, the more thin coats the better!) then if needed apply the third and final coat. (when the paint is no longer tacky let it bake in the sun, litteraly, don't try and speed it up with a hair dryer or heat gun you will just ruin the paint, as it can burn)
8.once the paint has curred apply the clear coat if the rest of you car has clear coat. As my brothers car was a 1992 golf they didnt have clear coat so it was no issue. so find out and apply it if you need to. This is an easy stage, as its clear and you should be pretty decent with the spray can now! (apply 2 coats)
As far as paint goes just make sure its rated to match the factory colour that you have!
Good luck and remember patients is a virtue!
If any one wants to add to this don't hate just add.
