Default cluster with a tach maybe?

so i just bought a 97 dx coupe

the second car i've had that's a stick that doesn't have a ****ing tachometer, i'm not taking this **** anymore

is there a wire that's there and ready to connect with a new cluster that has a tach and it's that easy of just getting a new cluster and replacing the other one?

or is there something more in depth

I am almost sure it dose have a plug for it, I mean they sorta did in 92-95 civics they just had a plug that worked for the cluster with or w/o a tach so why change....But I am not totally positive since I have never really looked into it nor know anyone who owns one...

You can do one of three things (least that's what I come up with) and yes the factory gauge cluster wiring has the tach wire already built in.

You can get an external tach, while nice this also lends to the annoying ricer/street racer who wanting to race (I know I had it happend a good bid).

You can purchase an EX cluster, it already has a tach (moves the fuel gauge over into the same space as the temp using a smaller dual needle set up) and all you'd have to do is swap the speedo assembly into the new cluster to keep the original miles of the car . This process is done by taking the cluster appart and removing 4 screws from the back that hold the speedo assembly in.

And the third is a major extreme you could do a cluster swap to an integra cluster..... takes alot more work (have to re-pin the plugs on the cluster as well as custom mount work) and I'd say not worth all the work just for a tach... tho if you love the look of the tegra clusters it'd be worth it.

I too have a DX and the OE cluster didn't have a tach, the previous owner installed a 3" sunpro tach (mounted to the A pillar just above the driver side air vent aka typical) and while it was a tach and did work, I hated the fact that it didn't match (black oe honda gauges to the sunpro's white face) as well as the fact people saw it and assumed it ment I got some heat under da hood. What I did was hit up Ebay and found an EX cluster and did the purchase and then the swap. I'd say check your local wrecking yards first and then ebay since my cluster cost a bit more (hell the integra clusters cost less....).

its listing cluster and head only, head only is just the speedometer/tach and that business right?

its a lot cheaper so i'm assuming its that, i found it for like 50 at tthe cheapest, but i'm still looking

and yeah i dontt want a tachometer mounted anywhere... that looks like ****

I believe a new cluster is over $300 at the dealership. Instead of spending a fortune, I bought a gray pillar pod with two gauge openings. The pillar color is almost a perfect match and the gauges aren't so huge that they are super-noticable rom the outside. I will have a full procedure for wiring and installing this, hopefully within a few weeks. It will be in my son's 97 CX. The lower gauge is a digital clock (his choice).

Here's a shot of it:
