i have a 96 civic ex auto(for now)...on my gauges theres no tach...just speedometer, fuel, and temp.
when i swap to a 5speed do i need to get a whole new gauge cluster? or can i just drop in a aftermarket tach? with the same cluster? thnx

 

You can use an aftermarket tach. I am running an '05 manual, it's got the same type of cluster as you. I'll be putting a tach in, eventually, though.

i also have a 95 dx and the dx i don't belive ever came with a tach i could be wrong. mine is also a five speed(no tach) i plan to add a tach but if your not stupid you can just listen to the engine and know when to shift you might not take it all the way to redline before you shift but you don't want to hit the rev limitor either. best thing to do is use the force! lol

actually if you got a 04+ vp/dx, you can put in a 01-03 lx cluster, altho the mileage on teh cluster WILL be saved to teh cluster, you cant reset the cluster

yeah 96, you can get one from an EX or something that has a tach, though im pretty sure youll want one from an auto so it has the little lights. but they are way cheaper anyway. check out EBAY.

 

i have an old 89 civic hatch dx 5 spd and it has no tach i dont fell the need for one

 

i changed mine out with an instrument cluster from i beleive an si. my original had a huge fuel and h2o temp guages. i like having a tach , 1 reason is , i cant feel or hear the engine if my stereo is turned up, another is at a stop light i can check the cluster and KNOW my engine still running
