Default LED resistance

need some advice on how to figure out on what resistance i should apply to some LED's that i am about to buy, im going to place them in my gauge cluster,A/C and also the gear shift for my automatice 99 ex civic, these area's use light bulb so im assuming that they use the 12v from the batt but what i want to know is what resistance to use with 12v, do diff LED's require diff resistance?? im looking into using flat top LED's for this project but if anyone could shine some light i would be more then usefull
