Default My First Rust Fix -- Pics

Like many other xx-96 Civics there is often rust on the rear quarter. Keep in mind this was my first time trying it out and I think it didn't turn out too shabby. The only concern is the clearcoat is very 'orangepeely.' What's the easiest way to fix this? (If any.)

As you can see in this final pic. its a little duller/blurry. (I'm assuming because of the orangepeel clearcoat.)
Hopefully someone is able to help me out with this.

stupid question here, but did you even repair the rust, or did you just cover it all with filler?

That was after I did the sanding. I knocked most of it out after thats in the pic., but wanted to keep a rough shape of the body where it wasn't too bad.

Not to worry you or anything, but usually rust like that is like cancer. It rusts from the inside out and in order to stop it you should cust out the whole rusting piece when its that bad, and then eaither get a replacement or from one out of steal sheets. If you cover over it it't not just gonna stop it, you have to get rid of it.

Yea I realize that but I didn't have $800 or so to fix both panels or I would have.I'll try wet sanding and buffing. What grit?

Its still a good cover up job, but in a year time its going to start spreading again, cover the rust underneath with oil.

probably finer then 600.. it just needs to be polished with the wet sand.. and its not gonna cost no 800 bucks to fix the rust in the panels.. just a little time and patience.. probly about30 bucks at the most if you have no materials.. i say 30 because the sheet metal would probly be like 5 bucks if you couldn't get a free scrap from somwhere and the bondo cream would be about 10 and the shortstrand fiberglass would be about 15 ish..well and you need a welder but you can pick up a small welder for less then800 bucks (even tho its complete bottom line welder it will still do the trick to anyting your wanting to do for body work) so already you can get it done cheaper then 800.. just gotta get a little square peice of sheet metal, cut it out to the shape, bend it the same curve as the body, (after cutting out the old patch that is) and then tack it in place, use tacks and then grind the tacks off and fiberglass over and then use finishing puddy bondo cream **** to get the perfect surface..why just tack it? thing about just tackin it is you get a wayy less chance of the metal worping on you.. cuase if it warps you gotta either start over or screw around with the shrink tip on the uni spotter... not fun haha better turn out with just tacks for sure

haha just some advice for down the road after that cancer starts showin through again

If you are gona wet sand and buff then you should use 2000 grit paper. You will then have to compund and polish the panel with a buffer. You can do it by hand but it takes alot of elbow grease. You should have blended the whole quarter for a cleaner job, then you wouldnt have that chemical line.Usually a repair like that is done by replacing the panel that is rusted with new metal. It wont cost $800, just a little research on how to do it.Keep an eye on ebay I know its not for youre year but I found this whole quarter going for a little more than $100.

I will say it was a nice try, at least you have the ***** to give it a go.

Sorry, when I said $800 I meant at a shop. I definitely don't think I'd be up to welding/replacing quarter panel.

And Mills, what does the oil do? Slow the growth of the rust?
