Painting my D17 Plastic Cover (Finished & pics).
Haha.. Thanks for the inspiration, guys :P. But, today I put 4 layers of spray on it and it turned out really good, surprizingly. With it being my first time doing a 'real' spray job
. Little to no runs at all. My first layer was really sloppy, just to get it all sprayed down, a very mild layer of paint. My second was just going over it all again, a few times, and a few more, making sure I got a nice coat on. Then my last layer was touching up the creases and stuff, because there was some black still showing, so I touched that up a bit.. Then for the final layer, I just did a VERY light layer of spray to top it off. And I waited 15~20 minutes between each coat, just in case. Then, I waited an hour to apply the clear coat, and I only got to put 1 layer of clear coat on, because it was getting dark outside, and the temperature was dropping, not to mention it was getting kind of late. But, so far it looks pretty nice.. I'm really liking the outcome
. I'll probably put 2~4 more coats of clear on it, depending on how shiny I want it.
I figured out how to do the letterings, a guy at autozone recommended it lol.. He said to get those VERY fine tip craft brushes, and get some paint and just go over them like that, but to be very careful and do a thin coat just to get it all done, then do another coat to top it off. So, I figured i'll sand the letters down when I get all my clear coats on, then paint the "HONDA" black, using his method, then probably put a few coats of clear over the lettering, to top it off.
I'm hoping to have all of this done tommorow. I'm gonna build a little sanding block tommorow in Woodworking, so I can get it sanded probably tommorow after I finish my coats of clear, and if i'm lucky i'll paint the lettering tommorow too. Most likely, if I can find some spare paint around my garage [8D]. When I get it all done, i'll definately take some finished pictures, and a picture of how it looks in the engine bay.

Does anyone think I should sand down the plastic a little, THEN spray paint it..? Or just paint and use clear coat? Would it make it look better, or does it matter?

yes sand it first. scuff it up good with like 800 grit or a scotch pad. then primer then paint. if you dont it WILL flake off and look terrible. oh and after you sand it, use a degreaser, then dont touch it with your skin, use a towel or something. a good paint job is all in the prep. and if you're going to sand the letters down, dont clear coat it before that. paint, sand the letters then clear coat. rattle can clear coat tends to have to funny properties that make it sand weird. if its not absolutely, completely and totally done curing it wont sand, it will like smear. good luck and post pics when your done

Here are some pictures:

And...
With it IN the engine bay.

It doesn't look TOO bad.. The orange isn't as bright in real life, its just the light, trust me
. Though, when I used a permament marker on the lettering (like above suggested) lol.. My friend was like "Dude, thats like... Totally ricy doing that." and i'm like "It BETTER look good, or that guy who recommended it is gonna get it lol." But yeah, its not too bad.. Though when I sanded the lettering off I got kinda wreckless and you can tell where I chipped the paint on the "H"
.. and some black marker spots... Haha, i'll touch it up tommorow probably. Sanding the letters down, I was really impressed how smooth the plastic was.. I wish I would of sanded the plastic cover before I sprayed it =/.I finally got to take some pictures of my headlights and taillights too. Since I ganked my granny's expensive camera.. Haha. *Goes off to make a gallery*
Tell me what you guys think?
Haha yeah.. Definately sand it down and take your time, trust me. You'll be pleased in the end with your hard work. I'm pleased, but I also know NOW I could probably do alot better. I learned alot just by doing my first one, and what to do better if I ever do another spray job

It came out looking nice, are you planning on painting other parts orange?

And I apologize for the lack of parts in my engine bay :P. My AEM v2 will be ordered within 2~4 weeks, and my Megan 4-1 Header, Random High-flow cat, and Apexi WS2 exhaust won't be ordered and put on until the summer, so I can get some money set aside. Right now i'm gonna be spending $700 bucks on 5-spoke 17" Exel gunmetal rims, and Toyo tires. Then after that, i'm probably gonna order my AEM v2, or tint my windows 25%, back and rear. So I gotta save up some more money :P. My next paychecks i'll have enough for my tires for sure, I had a little downset because I had to spend $150 on a Optima Yellow Top for my sound system, since i'm pushing 1500W Alpine Type-R sub, and a Kenwood 1000W amp with a 4.0 Soundstream Farad capicitor.
Also, I was thinking of painting my calipers orange too.. Yay or nay? I mean, the calipers would be the only orange on the exterior.. So i'm contemplating how it would look. I know some guy with a '00 Blue Si did his blue and it looked SICK, but.. With mine being black, I don't know if orange would look good or not :P.
Looks good. Just fix those spots and it will be awesome. If you get tired of it or it doesnt come out right, you can always sand the paint off and do it again. I've done mine a few times already, and will probably do it again when it warms up. You can paint the fuse cover too, it looks pretty good. You can paint anything plastic, but you dont want to over do it, too much gets ricey. If you do paint the calipers, dont cheap out. If you rattle can it, it will chip and look nasty. I think its duplicolor that makes this kit that brushes on that works really well. But you also have to take the brakes apart and clean it REALLY well. Any brake dust will trash the paint job. And the orange is definitely awesome. But I'm a University of Tennessee student, so I'm a bit partial to orange. Keep up the good work.
