Default Painting Rims

My daughter's 97 Honda Civic has rusty and grungy black rims, covered by Honda five spoke plastic wheel covers, that need painting. What is your suggestion for me to do this at home? I was thinking sanding with water/sand paper then spray painting with black gloss paint. Is that right or wrong?

Are you talking about painting the wheels or the covers?

get a 15 dollar syphon sandblaster. all you need is an air compressor and a bag of 3 dollar sand from Home Depot that is fine grained, and shoot that stuff on it to clean it. it will strip all of the old paint and whatnot off, leaving you with absolutely virgine metal, which needs to be kept from water and painted immediately, as it will rust within minutes. oh, a full face mask and maybe some painters overalls and a dust mask might be good too. that crap hurts when it hits you.

I am getting my rims painted at my local shop. The guy is doing them all for $150. He showed me an example and its a really sweet gunmetal color that will match my car great. Best part is if I nick em up he can repaint them easily . I like sacicons idea. I think I could find a million uses for a sandblaster like that but ive never seen one.

Duplicolor makes a wheel paint thats suppose to be really easy to use and works really good. i'd say look into that.
