RE: Polishing alloy rims
I'm not too sure on the correct answer to your question, but I do know I've heard of people polishing their rims themselves. I've had friends do it with motorcycles(rims/frame/sub-frame). Take a rough sand paper to it. Keep getting finer on the sand paper, then end up using a buffer/ polishing cloth and some polishing compound. I'm not sure on the exact grits of the paper, just start off rough and get smoother and smoother. I know it does require you to polish the rims like once a month to keep them looking shiny. FWIW.
