does anyone know a good way to get rust off of the exterior of a car? i have a rust spot the size of a quarter on my door panel. should i just take it in to get repaired, or is there a way to do it myself?? thanks.

I would say if u feel confindent in your painting skills it's worth a try.... just sand it down til no rust is there anymore and it's smooth then you can buy spray can of the matching paint. touch it up... use a little wet sand paper like say 1500 err somthing... just watch for over spray.... It will not turn out as good as a autobody shop but it will look better then rust by a long shot... if the rust is in the middle of the door it my be a little harder to get it good enough that you can't tell but if it's on a edge seems easyer... could just be me... If u screw up real bad could alway take it in and get a shop to fix it then...

Unfortunately, once rust gets into metal, it's just like cancer. The only way to get it out is to cut that part of metal out and replace it with new metal.
You could use a grinder and grind it off until it looks like clean metal, then paint it, but in a year it would be right back again.

if u wanna get balsy do this. Go to pep boys and get some Bondo body filler......sand the rust down till its gone......use the bondo like spackle on drywall......cover the hole and make it smooth..........THEN take it to get it painted by a shop. Itll cost prolly 200 to paint the whole thing but ull never be able to tell there was rust there. Hell do what the guy above said.....try to paint it with a can of matchin code paint......if it looks bad just go to a shop for paint. Definetly bondo the rust urself thou .....take ur time and ull be fine.

heres one thinkg you might wanna do cause usually even after you grind/sand down there still is the chance that spors from the rust have been left behind and if you paint over those than they will grow back. SO before any painting or body filling look into getting like a little bottle of rust remover/rust inhibitor its like 3-4 bucks at like autozone. It greatly reduces the chance of it comming back. Rust can come up through bondo, happened to me.
