I purchased a short shifter off of ebay not too long ago. It was in the $40 range as well, and came with a type r shift **** and boot. I did the install myself, everything fit nicely. I ran into some rust problems under the car and was forced to drill through a few screws. But as far as the product goes, I'm 100% pleased, and have had no problems with it.

short shifter isntall is fairly straight forward, StreetSniper did a DIY of it, check the DIY section and it should be all you need to know

And if you dont have the money for a B&M, an ebay will do you just fine for the time being. There have been a few stories about shifting hard and breaking the ebay ones, but those are few and far between, and if you do, you're only down like $30 anyway.
