Default Headlight adjustment (you've probably heard it before)

My headlights are fairly out of line; the passenger side is too low, and the driver's side is too far left. I've tried to adjust them myself (parking on a flat surface, about 20 feet away from a wall), but I noticed the gears you adjust with aren't actually moving the headlights. Take it to a garage? What could they do that I couldn't with a headlight that just won't adjust?

have a similar issue with 2010 civic- when I bought the car, used; the headlights (low beam) could be used for spotting animals in the trees! I've adjusted them down; but, they're till too high. Where can I find a diagram of the parts in the front body assembly? My bmw m5 had a great parts breakdown site. Does this site have a similar diagram? I KNOW i'm really pissing off the oncoming drivers- help!

How are they mounted in the car? Do I need to remove the front bumper to do this?
