<Edit for a bit of humor that might not have been favored >, that the reviews themselves had to split hairs to find the better car. In all of their tests the cars were within a "fraction" of each other in performance. True the GTI has a higher tag, but read the reviews when it came to interior and everyday driving, the GTI won by a landslide.
I found it funny that the several of the co-domestic/civic owners have said about a majority of Honda engines
It comes down to personal preferance with these two cars. I'd prefer a car with a comfortable ride and a great interior, with the speed if the need, and the GTI appears to deliver that from that review. There aren't many twisting canyons/mountains in the flats of west tennessee for me to worry about cornering in

First, I'm a huge proponent of turbocharging and thick gears — both of which come with the VW. The Civic is a rev machine, loudly hanging around the 6,000-rpm range for much of your trip from zero to 60. The VW gives you a more-than-decent amount of thrust off the line, without quite as much engine noise or the constant need to shift gears.

not only is the gti a few grand more but also consider the amount of money in repairs and such u'll have to spend, esp electrical problems in which they are known for having.....unless u get lucky....
