when they ask you about the record, be honest
and tell them about how you started working on your car and how it's your anti-drug and you've found a way around doing drugs and how you don't need them anymore
and tell them how you want to work hard so you can make money and keep working on that car and supporting yourself when you need to, and that you're willing to work as hard as it takes
it helps to convince people that you're past it

actually yea one of my freinds (not really freind just someone i know) works at dominos where i applied and i asked him to talk to the manager/hire person and he said he did but i got no callback. and if i call the places that i apply at and ask them about my application they say "we currently arent hiring"
when you apply somewhere and they are hiring, you have to be persistent. don't call them, just come in at a time of the day when they're least busy. come in and ask about your application. they'll see how much you really care and that's something they like.
just do it politely and don't interrupt when they're busy. When I got my first job I would sit there for like an hour or two waiting for an opportunity to talk to the manager about my application.
