this may seem odd
but what does everyone think about the space program? i recall when i was little, it was a BIG deal everytime we sent something or someone into space, but now the news doesnt even make mention of it...the program is alive and well, but does anyone think that it is worth the billions that are spent on it?
i plan on going to mars.. my major is aerospace engineering.. i wish the space program would move more towards the general public.. they dont want another accident to happen though... btw im at 421.. 420 is the date on my cars registration
I personally don't think its worth it. It was a big deal back during the Cold War b/c it was a space race. People thought the soviets were putting missles up there. I don't see what we have to gain from going to space. It is gonna be really hard to leave this solar system, and nearly impossible to leave the milky way. Its just too far, lots of that relativity crap. We discussed it in physics last year, and the teahcer pretty much said that space travel isn't gonna be possible outside the solar system. There are some good stuff like microwaves and stuff that come from the space program, but the billions we spend can be spent in research that actually will give us something more than pretty pictures.
i think its pretty cool..i have the space channel on satilite and they show all this sweet stuff, but i agree, no one cares anymore..you never hear of it on regualer t.v, i think its alot of money going for that when it could be used on more important things..but i would be cool to see whats out there, if were have some other life in the universe
I don't think any of us has any idea how much of our medical, technological, or communications systems have been pioneered and perfected in the quest for space. I bet if you researched it, it would BLOW YOUR MIND! Everything from computer networks to the technology of our tinted windows, somes from the minds that push the barriers of our atmosphere.
Without knowing all its done for humanity, its hard to flame its relevance or return on investment. There are an awefull lot of starving and homeless people out there, however, and that money could do a lot of good.

You can't say that those innovations that were invented for use in the space program would not have occurd anyway. Chances are that if the innovation was that important that someone would have invented it. Alot of the computer networking stuff was funded by the DOD.
Who do you think funded the space program?
Most things are not invented at random, there is someone trying to get from point a to point b, easier or more efficeintly.
Many of those innovations came as the result of a need for the advancement in technology to take something to the next level. Have you ever heard the saying: "neccessity is the mother of invention"? I think that applies here. Many of the innovations would have EVENTUALLY come around, but not nearly in the same time frame. Some of them wouldn't have been possible period without the environment in which they were produced.
