Two words: "safe drop".
A lot of courier items don't ACTUALLY require signatures - they can basically just leave it on your doorstep, assuming it's out of the weather. Problem with a safe drop is that you don't have a leg to stand on. They can say that they left it out of the weather and out of plain sight.
So I would say just let it go. I know it sucks - I would call and complain, but don't think you're going to see any insurance money. It's hard enough to win an insurance claim on a LEGITIMATE issue with a courier company.
