There's nothing to understand. It's just another dumb 15-minute internet joke. Either you "get" that kind of humor or you don't. Typically something like this starts when someone at the somethingawful.com forums posts a picture that they think is funny. Other people then proceed to photoshop it. A lot. There's no real reason why it's funny, I guess, other than how random and stupid it is. Some are funnier than others.

The gif that se7en posted is just a montage of a bunch of chops of the "O RLY?" owl, which I admit even I did not know about until se7en posted it.

Yeah, that was a good one. I still see references to that one once in a while in other flash movies and internet jokes.
