Default OKC twister

As a lot of you know, OKC got hit with a lot of twisters last night. The bad ones started in my area. I luckily did not get hit. Went just north of my house. I was outside watchin the thing. Needed a beer to feel more redneck. lol
I am stuck at home. There are power lines down everywhere. Thank god for generators, right? =P

Anyone able to pull up info on where all was hit?
I'll post some pics of the damage when they fix the power lines. I dont' wanna over do my generator.

National Weather Service issues tornado watch for western Oklahoma

By Associated Press

4:47 PM CDT, May 11, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 16 counties in western Oklahoma.

The watch extends along and 75 miles north and south of a line from 10 miles southeast of Chickasha to 45 miles west-northwest of Altus. It's in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The counties included in the watch are Beckham, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Comanche, Cotton, Custer, Dewey, Grady, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Roger Mills, Tillman and Wa****a.

The weather service says a warm front draped across central Oklahoma will lift northward as a dryline moves into western sections of the state. Severe weather, including large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes, could form along those features and move into central Oklahoma Tuesday night.

(May 11) -- The Southern Plains region is bracing for more severe storms after a barrage of some 37 powerful twisters barreled through Oklahoma, killing five people, injuring dozens and destroying homes and businesses across the state.

The National Weather Service predicts thunderstorms will continue pelting Oklahoma as it recovers from an onslaught of tornadoes that tore off roofs, flipped cars and snapped power lines, leaving an estimated 50,000 homes without power and severely limiting access to drinking water across the state.

As the region braces for thunderstorms, a severe storm system could unleash more tornadoes in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and northern Texas, forecasters said.

Among the dead was a young boy killed by flying debris in Oklahoma County, where another man's body was found beneath a recreational vehicle, officials said. At least 57 people were treated at hospitals in Oklahoma County, Cleveland County and Pottawatomie County, according to state emergency management officials.

Emergency officials said rescue teams were double-checking the hardest-hit areas for trapped victims.

"Anywhere we saw a shelter, we checked those," Oklahoma City Deputy Fire Chief Cecil Clay said during a 7 a.m. news conference today. "And we're going back out this morning doing a secondary search."

Clay said the death toll could rise once conditions allow rescue workers to reach the areas buried in debris.

"We have heavy fog (and) power lines down making it difficult to see all the hazards out there," Clay told The Associated Press. "We'll wait for more sunshine to resume our search."

Gov. Brad Henry, who planned to tour the region today, said state officials would support local recovery efforts.

"Many communities have already suffered damages, and we are doing everything we can to deliver them the help they need," Henry said. "Emergency management officials, state troopers and other first responders are in the field and will remain there as long as assistance is needed."

Stories of survival have begun surfacing from residents sent running for shelter by the tornadoes.

Stephen Markee and Rylan McNeely, both 16, were driving in an SUV when they saw one tornado approaching. They rushed into an elderly neighbor's home to take cover.

"We got in the closet. We were crying, and we were all praying," McNeely told The Oklahoman.

"I thought we were going to die," Markee said. "It was quick. It was like 30 to 45 seconds from when we were in there, then the roof was gone."

The fast-moving tornadoes, some clocked at 150 mph, destroyed approximately 50 homes in Oklahoma County, with 40 others sustaining serious damage. Officials at the Seminole Municipal Airport said damage to the terminal and planes is in the millions of dollars. The Little Axe School in hard-hit Norman, Okla., was reduced to rubble.

Many of the homes that survived the devastating storm are now without power and drinking water. Lake Draper Water Treatment Plant, which supplies about half of Oklahoma City's water supply, was affected by the mass electrical outage, forcing city officials to ban outside watering for 48 hours.

"It's unknown when that power will be restored," City Manager Jim Couch told The Oklahoman. "Major transmission lines in the area have been damaged."

Twisters that swept through Kansas caused serious damage in Belmont, east of Topeka, where no injuries were reported but homes were battered and suffered power losses.

"I came home once to look at my own personal vehicle and the windshield was all bashed out. The grandchildren's swing set was up and now it's gone," Alfalfa County Sheriff Charlie Tucker told the AP. "There was straight-line winds that came through."

The whirling tornadoes swept through Oklahoma at rush hour Monday, forcing trucker Sammy Ward and his partner to seek shelter in their truck.

"It started hailing and then it quit hailing, and then all of a sudden the wind hit and it just went dark," Ward told KWTV. "Trucks went to rocking ... and next thing we know the whole roof and everything was gone."

Norman Ray Trumbull was trapped in his family's tornado shelter along with his wife, two sons and his dog after the twister swept directly over his home.

"Once we got in the shelter, after about 30 or 50 seconds, we heard the rumbling noise come right over the house and then we heard the garage just crash on to the shelter," he told NBC's "Today" show this morning.

Warren Walters, manager of a roadside convenience store in Choctaw, rushed customers into closets before huddling on the floor in the center of the store.

"It was loud, extraordinarily windy ... things were flying everywhere and falling down," Walters told ABC's "Good Morning America." "It was a unique experience to go through."

A similar scene took place at another truck stop east of Oklahoma City, where employees found shelter inside.

"The three of us were kind of trapped in there, holding the door shut, praying to God that we don't die and that everybody else was safe," Charlescie Greenway told KWTV. "It was really scary -- the wind was like trying to pull the door off the latch."

Three American Red Cross shelters opened to aid the tornado-ravaged region, where officials are expected to issue more detailed damage estimates today.

State troopers and National Guard troops were dispatched to hard-hit neighborhoods to provide security as the state emergency management workers fielded calls for assistance.
