they were supposed to cool the brakes and, according to Jon Rush,suck the air from under the car thus creating downforce...

 

downforce......rrrrriiiiiiigggggghhhhhhhtttttt! ROFLMAO!!!!!

 

they also make a nice set of paddles if you run into a deep puddle

Looks like something youd put on the end of carrages in Gladiator while they ran around and chopped your legs off with the points at the end of those puppys

 

keep in mind, were talking about 1970s technology...and i bet that in the 1970s they did indeed cool the braking systems...and i doubt that the cars that used them saw much rain...downforce, i dont know about that...i would have to think that they would actually create drag...

think about the cars that run on the salt flats...they run perfectly smooth wheels, to reduce air resistance, but those have to create a ton of it...id like to see a set of those up close, to see how they work...my dad used to road race, maybe he will know something about them.
