Ben Collins (born February 13, 1977) is a single seater and sports car driver from Bristol, England. He started his motorsport career in 1994, competing in Formula First and Formula Vauxhall Junior on his way to International Formula 3. Ben is a Champion Racing Driver with success in Motor Sport from Formula Three and Le Mans Sportscars to GT and NASCAR.
Ben placed 2nd in the Marlboro Masters world class Formula Three championship event in 2000 and set the pace at the 2001 Le Mans 24 hours in his first season; for some four hours during the rain at night. After winning the European Stock Car Championship in 2003 ASCAR stock car racing he was signed by PDM Racing to do selected rounds of the 2004 Indy Racing League, but the car never appeared. In 2005, he competed in the British GT Championship in a Porsche 996 GT3, winning races on the way before moving up to the FIA GT Series with Ascari where he led races and scored several Pole Positions.
It is rumoured that Ben is lined up to compete in American Nascar racing in 2008 (his stated ambition) and is undergoing testing with a leading team in Nextel Cup.
It is also rumoured that Ben is The Stig on BBC TV's Top Gear. The Health & Safety Executive report into Richard Hammond's Vampire dragster crash in September 2006 records that Collins "worked closely with Top Gear as a high performance driver and consultant".[1] Footage that shows rare occasions on which The Stig speaks infront of a camera has also been compared to footage of Ben Collins himself talking, the voices seem to match up, although nobody can be completely certain as the voice of The Stig is slightly disguised under his crash helmet. In addition to this, recent coverage of the Britcar 24 hour race included a statement from the commentator that The Stig had raced in British F3 and ASCAR.
