Default Strange noise from car on a cold start.

i would like someone that is very positive that he knows what hes talking about to answer this. When I start my car when its cold, below freezing, there is a strange clicking noise before the car starts that lasts for a few seconds. Its not the typical starter clicking sound that you sometimes hear when the starter is going bad but a much fainter quieter clicking sound (at least I think so). I am not sure how to describe the sound or even if you would call it a click.Well, it only stated today but today is the first day of seriously cold weather (25 degrees). Do you think it can be the battery? My car is a 2001 plymouth neon and truthfully I can not remember ever replacing the battery in the 6 years I owned the car so i think its a strong bet that is the problem. I searched my reciepts to see if I ever had a new battery put in and i found in september 2003 when I had my car inspected they charged me 38$ for a "power pack" I have no clue what a power pack is but I assume that would be a battery. Someone please enlighten me. Even if it was a battery 2003 was 4 years ago. What do you think? The car starts fine, no odd noises, when the car warms up. Its only when it is stone cold. Oh ya happy thanksgiving.

It could be the 5-year old battery. Start by cleaning and tightening the battery terminals and connectors, as well as the battery ground connection on the engine bay frame. If this doesn't eliminate the problem, then take the car to AutoZone to have the battery and alternator checked.

When you get on a forum and describe a sound that you can't describe yourself, the best you're going to get is guesses.
Does this sound happen when you turn the key to the start position? If it's the start position, you get a few clicks before the starter engages? Do you cycle the key to get the starter to engage? Describe exactly what your doing and when the sound happens.

Hi there,I would have to hear the clicking sound myself but here are some insights.if the car cranks fine & starts fine in the cold weather, most likely your battery & starter are ok.Reading your description for the second time,it sounds like a weak relay. No need for alarm by the sounds of it.
