Default um.. Computer help?

Ok so normally i am very very good with computers, but i just got a new hard drive yesterday and it is the first time i am using a SATA hard drive. all others that i have had in the past have been IDE.

So i have 2 questions, does anyone know if i can use an IDE and SATA hard drive at the same time, when i set the IDE to slave and the SATA to master it shows the IDE in device manager but i can't access it through my computer, When i set my IDE (which has windows installed on it) and the SATA to Slave it originally did the same thing, but now it just says "detecting drives" when loading the system and then says that there are no drive available to boot with.

If i use the IDE by itself as Master it works fine, i also have managed to get the same result with the SATA drive as the master as well... but i can't seem to access both..

I have check the BOIS and read teh user manual for my motherboard and didn't find anything.

Also i may have to take my hard drive back, it's a Western Digital WD3200AAKS-00VYA 320GB.. but it is only reading as a 131GB drive...

I had the same setup for a little bit before i moved. I was able to access both drives for a few days then 1 day my pc wouldn't boot. I unplugged the sata drive and it worked perfect. I plugged it back in and nothing. It is still unplugged today. It has been about a month. I have been trying to find the answer. No luck yet.

I've heard lots of different solutions to this, but haven't had to do it myself so I don't really know. Some people say it depends on your motherboard, some people say it doesn't matter. I've also heard people say you need to install the OS on the SATA drive then the IDE drive will show up.

Also I'd suggest just getting another SATA drive because running SATA and IDE drives at the same time can slow things down a bit from what I've heard, and it seems to add up. For the IDE drive I'd suggest you get a USB enclosure for it if you really need to use it.

As for the drive not reading right that's usualy an OS problem. What OS do you have? And for that case what MB do you have? That'd help me out a lot.

Yeah I'd say get an external enclosure for it, that way you can use it as a portable drive too after you get the other SATA drive.

I suggest the Cooler Master X Craft enclosures, some of the best I've come across.

I honestly can't pull any other solution out of my ***, sorry bro.

BTW the SATA drive should be reading the full 320 if you have XP. Does it have any partitions on it? Dunno why a new drive would, but thats the only thing I could think of.

Edit - I just read something that says the problem with your mobo is the Jmicron IDE controller and that it wont run SATA and an IDE drive at the same time.

Ahh man are you serious? that ****ing blows... i was thinking that since it shows the drive in Device manager but not in My computer that i may just allocate a drive letter to it if it appears in Disk Management, but i am at work now and wont be able to try that till tomorrow,

It really should just work. Please note that you dont really have to set one to master or slave as they are not on the same controller.

If your IDE drive is your boot drive you should leave it on master if its the only IDE drive you have. Then in the bios you have to tell the PC to boot of the IDE not the sata.

As for the sata showing up as 131gb, that sounds like the lba addressing issue that older versions of wondows had. Is your XP on SP1 atleast? Also sometimes these drives do have jumpers that can limit its size, off hand im not sure on that drive but you might want to read the specs on the manufactures website to see if you have set a jumper incorrectly.

I have an array of IDE and Sata drives on one computer (1.6tb) and they all work just fine on a XP pro SP1 install.

Well with my installation of windows on the SATA drive i haven't installed SP1 or 2 yet, but on the IDE drive i have SP2 on it, and it does the same thing wether i use either drive. Now when it showed 131GB the first time, that was at the very beginning of the installation of windows, like when the screen is only blue and gray with no mouse or cursor, basically a DOS program almost. then after windows was setup on it it still shows the wrong drive size. Now tomorrow i will install SP2 on it but i highly doubt that will fix the issue. i think i may format it again and redo the partition and everything, cause there was no partition on it when i got it, i had to make one.

Did you try setting them both to master? If you set the IDE to slave but don't have a master hooked up to IDE, your computer is gonna be like WTF?
