I just did a search for you on AutoTrader.com for cars $1,500 or less.
Here are a few of the options here in South Florida -
94 Honda Accord 113k miles
97 Nissan Altima 172k miles
97 Mitsubishi Eclipse 194k miles
95 Civic
2001 Ford Focus 123k miles

Also, there is a little "edit" button in the corner of your post. Click that if you see a misspelling that you want to fix, don't double post.
Yeah, a lightweight RWD car in Toronto. I don't see how that could possibly end badly.
OP, I'd say try to find a 92-95 Civic. Like Cv said, try to find an SI model (but there's nothing wrong with the lower models, the SI will just have more creature comforts). Just look out for rust; that generation is known for rusting where the quarter panel meets the rear bumper. But for $1500 you're not going to get "kinda fast", nor should you really have "kinda fast" for a first car.

Find me a running 240 for $1500 that doesn't have giant rust holes in the frame lol... even rusty 240s go for a lot of money by me. I would love to have one but too hard to find clean ones without breaking the bank.
And honestly don't worry about getting something super nice for a first car. My first car was a Cavalier my parents gave me, I totaled that thing within a month. Getting a pos is good for starting out since you are bound to make some mistakes driving, it'll happen.
