Default Windows XP Home Edition

My buddy is taking one of his old computers and turning it into a backup computer for all his media data and maybe some single player gaming. I believe its a 1.2 - 1.6 ghz with 128 - 512mb of ram. The hard drive has windows 98 2nd edition on it currently but he wants to put the new windows xp home edition on it. The thing is that this computer will have no connection to the internet or any servers at all. Ive heard with the new XP Home with SP2 OS is that you have to register it on the internet in a couple of days or XP will shut itself off. Is this true?

IDK, I've heard about that too, but i don't remember registering it on my computer though. If I were him, I would just install win2000, since it's more stable and has a normal looking interface, unlike the "clown on acid" theme of winXP. Oh and btw, I believe you can get a legit copy on ebay for $60 or so.

Well another reason he wants xp is because the video card he has in it now will only recognize the drivers if the computer has xp, i dont know why its like that though. He bought the video card off another friend that was using it and his OS was XP. I let him use my windows 98 OS and the drivers will not recognize the card, its very weird.

It has to be activated. Or it will shut off. just quickly plug it up to activate it once you get XP. THen it will never bother you again. XP actually will run flawlessly if you know how to use it right even if it is the home edition.

I think when I got it, when setting it up, it gave me the option to connect it to the internet then, but I didnt have to... But I already had my internet set up.. And I have the new WindowsXP Media Center and I like how it looks...

Well the thing is that the modem that was on it burnt out and he doesn't have any extra ones and he doesn't want to buy another one. So basically if you can not activate through the internet it will not run at all?
