Default 01 Ex Idle Issues and Surging

I'm new and just purchased my 01 Ex Vtec the other day and when I start the car up it rev's up a lil then drops down to under 500 rpm's and shakes then idles @ about 600 with little vibration. Also when I drive and come to a stop and put the clutch in, the rpm's again drop to almost nothing w/ bad shaking, then kick back up to 600 rpms. The car also surges everytime after I start it and let it warm up... and then after it's nice and warm, it surges mostly while accelerating up hills, and sometimes during acceleration on flat ground. Injectors dirty? Fuel filter? Fuel pump?

Thanks guys

Mine was surging a tad just like yours when I bought it two weeks ago...poured 2 bottles of Prestone SUV cleaner and put new plugs...now it is a champ...I hardly even feel the engine when on...

thanks for the reply. yea I got some fuel injector cleaner that I'm going to use... changing the plugs wouldn't be such a bad idea. I wonder if even it's the fuel pressure regulator? possible?

Could be...but first try the easy and simple stuff...if it does not work you can take your car to autozone to have your fuel pressure tested...change you fuel filter, helps also...

my car does exactly the same thing and has been for a few months. its gotten to the point where some times the idle drops so low that it stalls. I replaced plugs and checked all my plugs and control valves and still cannot fix the problem. My car threw and idle control valve CEL a while back but i cleared it. It seems to be worse when its hot out. i've pretty much given up for now.

First, what does surging mean? Second, if your engine is shaking at idle, it may be possible that your EGR valve is stuck open. This will allow exhaust gas into the cylinders which is bad at idle and will cause the shaking. However, i am pretty sure you would have a check engine light if this was the case. I would go with plugs, wires, fuel filter, and air filter. You just bought the car so it is a good idea b/c you don't know when the owner last changed these items and they aren't that expensive anyway.

Well I got a CAI on it, just put it on the other day. I'm going to go do a fuel pressure test tomorrow on my day off, and then go from there. By surging I mean... I push on the gas pedal and it like go slow then will kick in and pick up real quick and do that back and forth real quickly. That's why I thought the injectors, but I don't really know.

Give that a good read, lots of different things to try. THere is also a DIY for bleeding coolant, might want to start there.
